Australian Passport
An Australian passport will get you into a huge number of countries for a short visit without a visa – check this link for an updated list:
But don’t take entry to any country for granted, do an internet search for the latest requirements, and always check the Australian Government’s Smart Traveller website for their recommendations.
Here are some key points to consider:
For most countries your passport expiry date must be at least six months after your planned departure from that country, and it must have some blank pages available to be stamped y immigration. See this list for the current requirements:…..
If you do need a visa apply early – a website may say it can be obtained in a few weeks, but get in early because there are a lot of things that can cause delays!
Health certificates had a brief revival due to the Covid pandemic, and some countries, or travel insurances, still require documented proof that you have had the vaccinations recommended for their region. See this list for the current requirements:…..
Travel to the USA requires an ETSA travel authorisation
The USA may not require a visa for Australian citizens, but it requires a current ETSA travel authorisation. An ETSA is usually issued within 24 hours after application, but if there are any questions to be resolved it can take weeks, or even be refused. Apply early! Here is the ETSA application website.
Note that the response you will receive is an email saying that your ETSA status has changed: it may not look like, or be labeled as, an “approval” and there is no certificate or similar document issued.
Travel to Europe Schengen countries will soon require an ETIAS travel authorisation
At the time of writing Europe’s Schengen countries did not require a visa for visits under 90 days, but these arrangements will change when the EU ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) commences operation. This is currently scheduled for early 2025 – you can obtain updates on the implementation of ETIAS here.
International driving licence
Do you need an International Driving Permit for a rental car? It depends on the country and the car rental company. Most European countries will accept a current Australian driver’s licence, but if there is any doubt I would advise getting an International Driving Permit as well – you can apply online. More information can be found here.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is recommended in all cases, and can by required to obtain a visa, particularly a long stay visa. See our Travel Insurance page for more info.
